Types of Turnbuckles
 

Eye And Eye Turnbuckle

The Eye and Eye Turnbuckle style is a favorite amongst consumers and can be used in any setting. This Turnbuckle style features a closed-loop, teardrop fitting on each end. In detail, the Eye and Eye Turnbuckle can be used as a shackle, attaching either end. The shackle pins just slid right through the eyes of the Turnbuckle.

 

Hook And Hook Turnbuckle

Another commonly used Hook and Hook Turnbuckle, this hook end fitting is easy to connect and disconnect attachments. They’re used to connect a fastening point through the use of a shackle or quick link. Unfortunately, they don’t come equipped with a safety latch. We recommend not using this style in connection applications where an unexpected release could occur.

Q: How are turnbuckles sized?

A: Measure from the inside of the “nut” to the other (inside area) nut. A 6” turnbuckle will measure 6”. A 9” turnbuckle will measure 9”, and a 12” turnbuckle will measure 12”. That measurement will tell you the proper size turnbuckle to order.

Q: Do turnbuckles have reverse threads?

A: Turnbuckles have a left-hand thread on one side and a right-hand thread on the other, allowing them to adjust from open to closed and either tighten or slacken the wire rope or cable's tension.

Q: What is the difference between a turnbuckle and a sleeve nut?

A: Turnbuckles are ideal when tensioning or adjusting of the tie rods is required internally at the bar to bar connection. he sleeve nut is less susceptible to bending than the turnbuckle, however the turnbuckle allows the installer to see the thread engagement. Both components require right and lefthand threads.

Q: Can you adjust a turnbuckle under load?

A: Note: It is not permitted to adjust the length of the turnbuckle under full load. Tensioning below the WLL is permitted. It is advisable first to adjust roughly the length of the turnbuckle and then load the turnbuckles to a certain tension. The tension may not exceed the full capacity (WLL).

A: Sprays and other lubricants do not sufficiently coat the threads. Entirely remove each of the threaded eyelets from the body of the turnbuckles. Liberally apply the grease to the ENTIRE thread. This can be messy, so it may be helpful to have some paper towels on hand.
